In chess, the endgame is the point in the game where the series of strategic decisions that were made along the way has led to an inevitable victory by one of the players. In spinning, we can make a series of strategic decisions to end up with the yarn we want for a specific end use.

Knitting, more than any other craft, relies on spinners making the best choices we can to get the yarn to make a successful cloth. This Master Class will examine the series of decisions that can help us make yarns best suited to some of the different challenges knitting presents. Michelle will walk you through the choices we can make and how each one affects the cloth you knit, then we will all work together to design three yarns to optimize our knitted cloth.

The afternoon also includes all fibre for samples, a personal handcrafted coffee or kombucha beverage, light snacks, and a chance to mingle with other spinners who are as passionate about yarn as you are!

Topics covered will include:

-the mechanics of the knitted stitch and how it interacts with yarn.

-fibre selection and substitution

-woollen versus worsted

-2-ply vs yarns with more plies

-the roles of tpi and twist angle in determining yarn characteristics

-using knitted gauge to determine yarn diameter

-considerations for reproducing yarns

You will need to bring:

-a spinning wheel in good working order

-spinning oil, orifice hook, and any other tools you use to ensure your spinning       goes smoothly

-4 or more bobbins

-lazy Kate

-scissors

-labels for samples

-baggies for extra fibre
